Toaster Hack (modification)
Lynne Moon at Moondrops commissioned jeff2.0 to modify a couple of toasters to pop up on queue. One was going to be part of a film shoot with the second one as a backup.
The request was as follows:

Thanks Lynne, for giving us our "BIG BREAK" into the movie industry !
|
First we had to figure out how a toaster works. We learned that:
A small electro-magnet holds the bread cage down. A spring pops it up. Nothing works with the heater unit itself disconnected.
| We did some sleuthing and found that the magnet was powered by 18.5 volts DC. with the natural current of 74.2ma.
|
We installed a transformer and rectifier to create an external 18v DC supply.
We also included a current limiting resistor for safety.
| We added the "armed/resting" switch and the "FIRE" button.
|
Building both units at the same time.
| Labels applied.
|
Finished Product in1 working day (and one night thinking about how to do it.)
